TMVR: Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is the first and only hospital in Fairfield County to perform transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) with the MitraClip® device, a life-saving procedure to repair a diseased mitral valve without open heart surgery.

The SVMC Transcatheter Heart Team uses Abbott MitraClip® to treat patients with symptomatic moderate to severe mitral regurgitation who are considered high or prohibitive risk for open surgery. The team, consisting of cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, echo cardiologists, radiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists, performs the procedure in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab as well as the state-of-the-art hybrid OR. Only a handful of hospitals in the tri-state area perform this procedure.

The TMVR procedure represents another first and another milestone for cardiology at St. Vincent’s. St. Vincent’s was also the first in the area to perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR procedure in 2013.
