Take Cancer Prevention Into Your Own Hands
No one knows exactly what will prevent you from developing cancer. However, these 7 important tips can help you lead a healthy lifestyle:
1. Stop smoking
Smoking (including secondhand smoke) causes many types of cancer, especially lung cancer. Quitting smoking is one of the best ways you can prevent cancer. For more information about St. Vincent’s smoking cessation program, click here.
2. Eat a healthy diet
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans, and limit fat. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. 3. Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active
Maintaining a healthy weight helps lower the risk of many types of cancer, including breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney. Physical activity also lowers your risk. You should get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
4. Protect yourself from the sun
Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer and one of the most preventable. Use generous amounts of sunscreen when you're outdoors and avoid tanning beds and sunlamps (just as damaging as natural sunlight).
5. Get immunized
Protect yourself from potentially cancer-causing viral infections, especially Hepatitis B and Human papillomavirus (HPV).
6. Avoid risky behaviors

7. Get regular medical care
See your primary care physician annually and get regular self-exams and screenings for various types of cancers (skin, colon, prostate, cervix and breast).
