Raising Sails and Dollars to Support Local Cancer Patients and Their Families Through the 15th Sail Park City Regatta™
July 1, 2016
BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – For 15 years, sailors from the greater Bridgeport area have participated in one of the oldest and largest independent fundraising regattas on Long Island Sound – the Sail Park City Regatta™. This major fundraising event will take place on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Fayerweather Yacht Club (FYC) in Bridgeport, CT. The Regatta will be hosted by FYC and Black Rock Yacht Club in Bridgeport. Proceeds will benefit St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound, Connecticut’s premier cancer charity.
“What makes this event special is that unlike most fundraising regattas, we receive no support from national organizations or spokespeople. We are truly an independently run Regatta. Local citizens are supporting their neighbors in their time of need,” explained Regatta Chair Rick Perret. “This year is extra special as we celebrate our 15th anniversary. Since the first event was held, we have raised close to $275,000 supporting SWIM Across the Sound, an organization that provides assistance to cancer patients and their families in the community. Of course, the value proposition of the SWIM is that all the money stays local and goes to patient support and care, not research. With so much cancer fundraising going to research, we believe the SWIM model is unique and can make real differences in the lives of those suffering from this terrible illness.”
"The regatta started 15 years ago when a few members of Fayerweather Yacht Club were observing the SWIM Across the Sound Marathon,” shared Perret. “An idea clicked in their minds – ‘Why can't we do a regatta and raise money to help?’ That first regatta saw seven boats at the starting line. Now we've grown to over 40 boats and we hope to have even more this year.”
This year’s Principal Sponsors are Whole Foods Market Fairfield, Kramer Photography, Loong Sails USA, and Aquarion Water Company. Supporting Sponsors are Conair®, Vineyard Vines, SCA, Yannico Transport, Weather Routing International, Lynn Cesaria Styling, Get Your Ducks in a Row, LLC, and Frame & Save. Our Media Partner is WindCheck Magazine. There is still time for more sponsors and vendors to get on board. To become a sponsor, contact Rick Perret at (203) 545-9598.
The Regatta will consist of up to two races, depending on conditions. There will be Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker PHRF Classes, along with a new Hobie-Cat multi-hull race. This new class is perfect for the large number of Hobie owners situated throughout Southwestern Connecticut. One-design racers, junior sailors, and boats with all-women crews are encouraged to race. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second, and third place finishers in each division, and all skippers and crew are urged to solicit donations for their boat. The three boats that raise the most funds will receive special awards. All donations to the Sail Park City Regatta™ are tax deductible.
The crew, either a sailboat or “virtual sailboat,” that raises the most funds will be awarded the Jan Williams Memorial Perpetual Trophy. The trophy honors the longtime SWIM Across the Sound co-chair and volunteer was perhaps the charity’s staunchest supporter and lost her battle with cancer
