The Cardiac Rehabilitation Department of St. Vincent’s Regional Heart & Vascular Center partners with patients who have undergone cardiac surgery, or experienced other cardiac conditions, to create personalized programs designed to return them to healthy and active lifestyles.
"The [rehab] program is great. They teach us about our medicines, nutrition, changes in lifestyles - and the exercise is one on one but monitored, which makes you feel really comfortable. It’s been a family experience as well. Changing our nutrition – my wife and I, we shop together, read the labels, and my daughter is catching on. I just thank everyone from me and my family because we’re all in this together." - Joe, Monroe, CT
By using the latest equipment and exercise protocols, and demonstrating the highest professional standards, our rehabilitation program has met the stringent requirements for certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). The AACVPR is a professional non-profit organization dedicated to quality, integrity, and continuous improvement in fighting cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
Cardiac Rehab Phases
This inpatient phase focuses on patient education and ambulation, or walking assistance, and help determining how well the patient can care for him or herself. The patient’s ability to exercise is also assessed. Ongoing patient and family education is provided regarding the importance of healthy diet and lifestyle habits.
A 12-week outpatient program that begins about four to eight weeks after surgery or an acute event, consisting of exercise, education, stretching, relaxation, and counseling. Hour-and-a-half classes are held three times weekly, in morning or late afternoon sessions. The goals of this phase are to optimize recovery and help rebuild confidence so patients can leave feeling self-reliant, functionally independent, and emotionally secure, with a new outlook on life.
A cardiac wellness and maintenance program designed to help patients establish and maintain a long-term healthy lifestyle built around diet, exercise, stress reduction, and medical compliance. This phase has no defined end point and patients can remain active in the program as a way of staying on the wellness track. Classes are offered daily.
