Smoking Cessation at St. Vincent’s
Want To Stop Smoking? We Can Help
It’s hard to quit smoking. But it’s the single most important thing you can do for your health. When you quit smoking, you’ll lengthen and improve the quality of your life — and hopefully, prevent cancer.
You can quit smoking. We can help.
SmokeStoppers: We Help You Quit
SmokeStoppers at St. Vincent’s is a tobacco prevention and cessation program for teens and adults throughout Connecticut. Led by a SmokeStoppers Program Facilitator, this course will guide you through the actual stages of quitting. We give you the tools and support you need to give up smoking for good.
The SmokeStoppers consist of eight sessions divided into three stages:
Quitters' Countdown: Prepares smokers psychologically and physically for the quitting experience
Learning to Stop: Offers the techniques, guidance and structure necessary for cessation during the critical first days of nicotine withdrawal
Staying Smoke Free: Creates a system that addresses transitional needs and eases the way to permanent cessation

SmokeStoppers For Teens: Lowering Teen Smoking Statistics
At St. Vincent’s Medical Center, we are working to lower these alarming teen smoking statistics:
Average age a Connecticut child starts smoking: 11.7
6,000 Connecticut children take up smoking each year
90% of smokers begin before age 18
90% of all lung cancers results from smoking
Our program, St. Vincent's Teen SmokeStoppers Program, sponsored by St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound, provides free interactive teen smoking prevention and cessation classes in schools throughout the state. SmokeStoppers reaches approximately 20,000 students with smoking prevention and awareness workshops. By working with teens, their families and their communities, we can make a difference in teen health and lower the alarming teen smoking statistics.
