Without exception, patients usually have at least one or two questions about their hospital billing. At St. Vincent’s we want our patients to get their answers quickly and easily so they can focus on what matters most - feeling better.
St. Vincent’s recognizes that there are times when patients in need of care will have difficulty paying for the services provided. St. Vincent’s Financial Assistance Program provides discounts to qualifying individuals based on their income. In addition, assistance is available for patients to apply for free or discounted programs when eligible. St. Vincent’s provides emergency medical services to all patients, regardless of ability to pay.
Please contact our Financial Counselor at (203) 576-6257 for free, confidential assistance. Representatives are available Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Who qualifies for financial assistance?
Financial assistance is available for patients with limited incomes who are uninsured or underinsured. Patients accrue a large balance due to co-pays, deductibles, coinsurance or services that are not covered. Our Financial Counselors can determine if you qualify for financial assistance or a payment plan. You may apply for a discount regardless of immigration status.
What are the income limits?
The amount of discount varies based on your income and the size of your family. Our financial assistance policy has expanded the income limits beyond the Federal Poverty Limits (FPL) up to 400% of the FPL. Please contact our Financial Counselor’s office at (203) 576-6257 for specifics.
What do I need to apply for a discount?
What do I need to apply for a discount?
Patients will need to present acceptable identification information and gross income, including wages, child support, rent, pension, Social Security, unemployment benefits, Workers Compensation and any other potential verifiable income.
Can someone explain the discount and help me apply?
Yes, free, confidential help is available. Call the Financial Counselor at (203) 576-6257. If you do not speak English, someone will help you in your own language. The Financial Counselor can determine if you qualify for free or discounted programs, such as Charity Care, free bed funds and Medicaid. The Counselor will assist with the application process and proper documentation.
What services are covered?
All medically necessary services provided by St. Vincent’s are covered by the discount, including outpatient services, emergency care and inpatient admissions. Charges from private doctors who provide services in the hospital may not be covered. You should talk to the private doctors about discounts or payment plans.
How much do I have to pay?
Our Financial Counselor will give you the details about your specific discount(s) once your application is processed.
How do I get the discount?
Patients must complete the application form. After receiving income verification, St. Vincent’s can process the application for a discount, according to your level of income. You can apply for a discount before you have an appointment, when you come to the hospital to get care, or when the bill comes in the mail.

What if I'm rejected?
During the application process, patients will not be required to pay the hospital bill. If your application is denied, the hospital must submit the reasons to you in writing and must provide an avenue for appeal of this decision to a higher level within the hospital.
What if I do not meet the income limits?
If you cannot pay your bill and are not eligible for discounts, St. Vincent’s offers an interest-free payment plan to those that meet the income limits. The amount you pay depends on your income. At a minimum, any patient who does not have health insurance is eligible for an uninsured discount on non-elective medical services provided by the hospital. If payment is received within 30 days from the date of service, an additional “prompt pay” discount will be applied. We accept cash when paid in person, checks and major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard and Discover. If you are having difficulty paying your bill, please contact a Financial Counselor. If you do not alert us we may refer your account to an outside bill collection service. We can work with you to ensure we do not proceed to collections.
Patients who cannot afford to pay their full balance may enroll in a short-term, interest-free monthly payment plan.
What additional services are available?
St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound offers assistance with mammograms and prostrate cancer screenings. Limitations do apply. Please contact (203) 576-6158 for more information.
