Physicals For Employment
General post-offer physical exams:
Post-offer physical exams are recommended to help assess an applicant’s current medical and physical condition, as well as indentify pre-existing medical conditions and past injuries, etc. When coupled with a job-specific physical demands assessment, the examining physician can make a realistic determination regarding an applicant’s ability to perform his or her job duties.
Commercial drivers' exams
CDL exams are performed to medically evaluate an individual's ability to operate equipment and vehicles which require a commercial drivers' license. Specific, federal and state exam guidlines are followed as applicable. These include evaluations for vision, hearing and color perception.
Periodic medical exams (regulatory)
Numerous jurisdictions and governmental agencies require that specific examinations be conducted on a periodic basis for reasons of public safety, hazardous materials surveillance and other factors.
Examples of periodic medical exams include CDL drivers exams, medical clearances to wear a respirator, fire fighter fitness for duty assessments and healthcare worker communicable disease assessments.
Respirator medical exams:
The wearing of a respirator can, in and of itself, lead to functional difficulties. Since respirator use is often associated with other environmental factors such as extremes of heat, cold and confined space, wearers’ of certain respirators are required to undergo annual medical clearances.
Users of respirators may include firefighters, divers, painters, lead and asbestos abatement workers, demolition workers and HAZMAT response teams. A respiratory exam may include a detailed medical history, physical exam, spirometry (pulmonary function) and chest x-ray. In addition, a fit test is also required to ensure that the respirator effectively seals the user’s airways from hazardous substances.
Fitness for duty exams:
Existing employees may experience a change in their health status, suffer an injury, or otherwise become subject to circumstances which make their ability to perform their job safely to come into question.
Job-duty-specific exams, which address the individuals’ functional capabilities, can assist an employer in determining whether an employee can work in an effective manner while s not posing a hazard to the employee, to coworkers, or others. An examination can further be enhanced by the use of special testing or lab screening.

Physical Exams can be supplemented with the following diagnostic tests:
- Drug and Alcohol Testing
- Comprehensive Vision Screen (Color, Depth Perception)
- Audiometry (Hearing Evaluation
