LUNAR® Bone Densitometer

For osteoporosis

St. Vincent's SWIM Women's Imaging Center (203) 576-5500

Know your strength. The SWIM Women's Imaging Center at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT is equipped with the state-of-the-art LUNAR® bone densitometer.

This highly sensitive densitometer identifies bone loss at a much earlier stage, comparing your results to your own age group and to a young, normal female. The test is completely painless and provides your risk score in just minutes.

Consider having this test if:

• You have a history of osteoporosis in your family
• You are a female over the age of 65
• You are a smoker or have excessive intake of caffeine
• You are of Asian or Caucasian ancestry

Osteoporosis and densitometry

Risk factors for osteoporosis are many. Just a partial listing would include being a Caucasian female, being over 65, being a smoker and living a lifestyle that doesn’t include regular exercise. This “silent disease” offers few symptoms beyond a loss of physical height and curvature of the upper back and pain in the hip, back or wrist.

Here at the WIC, a bone densitometer can measure your bone mineral density, or BMD, which is then compared to optimum density (“peak” measurements characteristic of young bones) and then to average densities for your age range. What emerges is a gauge of your risk for bone fractures, which, as we age, can become dangerous precursors to life-threatening complications.

Bone-density scanning at the WIC is quick, comfortable and takes less than 10 minutes. Clothing need not be removed (except for belt buckles and other metal items and jewelry), and the only “equipment” involved is the padded table on which you will lie as images and measurements are captured using a minimal amount of X-ray.
