Sports Related Injuries
Exercising is good for you, but sometimes you can injure yourself. Accidents, poor training or improper technique or gear can cause injuries.
Not warming up or stretching enough can also lead to injuries. Most sports injuries are due to either trauma or overuse of muscles or joints.
The majority are caused by minor trauma involving muscles, ligaments or tendons including:
- Sprains and strains
- Knee injuries
- Swollen muscles (Inflammation)
- Achilles tendon injuries
- Pain along the shin bone
If you get hurt, stop. Continuing to play or exercise can cause more harm. Treatment often begins with the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) method to relieve pain, reduce swelling and speed healing. Other possible treatments include pain relievers, keeping the injured area still, rehabilitation and sometimes surgery. You will be in great hands with St. Vincent’s Medical Center’s Orthopaedic team if your injury does require surgery.
