Elizabeth M. Pfriem Hybrid OR at St. Vincent’s
Always on the cutting edge of the technological wave of advancement, St. Vincent’s Medical Center is one of a handful of hospitals in the state with its Elizabeth M. Pfriem Hybrid Operating Room (OR), which is a faciliy in which both surgical and catheter-based (non-surgical) vascular/cardiovascular procedures can be performed.
Hybrid OR Offers Advanced Imaging During Surgery
Increasingly complex surgical and interventional approaches require more advanced imaging and integrated operating rooms. Mobile C-arms, OR imaging technology introduced in the 1960s, have been a mainstay in this area since then. As imaging requirements during surgery have advanced, C-arms can no longer totally meet the need, and imaging equipment equivalent to the angiography devices used in interventional radiography and cardiology must be integrated into the surgical suite. Enter the Hybrid OR.
The Hybrid OR at St. Vincent’s combines surgical equipment and instrumentation for open surgery procedures with a fixed and dedicated imaging system as well as an imaging compatible OR table, lights and surgical booms to accommodate open, minimally invasive and interventional procedures. Our Hybrid OR, at 1000 square feet is equipped with a state-of-the-art imaging system called Siemens’ Artis Zeego.
Hybrid OR Procedures:
The Hybrid OR can accommodate:
- TAVR - transcatheter aortic valve replacement and repair
- Vascular and cardiovascular procedures including Mesenteric artery interventions
- Complex thoracic aneurysm repair
- Aortic aneurysm repair and carotid stenting
- Hybrid coronary revascularization
- Transcatheter valve replacement and repair
- Stent graft placement in the thoracic aorta
- Pacemaker and ICD implantation
- Correction of rhythm disorders
- Renal artery interventions.
Once the FDA approves percutaneous heart valve replacement, which is best suited to a Hybrid OR, St. Vincent’s will once again be leading the way with its new facility, nationally recognized surgeons and advanced technology. The spectrum of cardiovascular procedures at St. Vincent’s is expected to grow as new procedures are approved.
Hybrid ORs are not limited to cardiovascular use. Other specialties such as vascular and neuro specialists may call upon this type of facility and its angiography systems for enhanced imaging in a surgical setting.
