Cardiology-Heart Services - St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport CTFAMILY: Where to wait during surgery?

While you are undergoing cardiac surgery, your family may wait in the hospital or at home. Family may obtain an in-house beeper from the surgical unit located on the third floor of the medical center so that the team can provide updates regarding the surgery and communicate as needed. Waiting areas in the hospital are located in the main lobby, in the surgical waiting room on the 3rd floor or on the 8th floor family waiting room.

Following the operation, your cardiac surgeon will personally talk with your family. After speaking with the surgeon, the family must wait about an hour before visiting the patient in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) on the 8th floor, in order to give the staff sufficient time to assess your condition and move you to your new location.

FAMILY: Visiting the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) 8th floor

Immediate family and close friends are allowed in the Intensive Care Unit - SICU 24 hours a day, limited to two visitors at a time. However, prior to each visit, all visitors must call from the family room on the 8th floor. The SICU is a busy place and the nursing staff may be busy with your family member or another patient. Please respect patients' privacy at all times. Because of the intensive care and complexity of the patients' medical condition in this area, we do not recommend small children in this area.

VISITORS: Visiting the Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) 8th floor

Visitors are allowed on the Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) on the 8th floor to visit the patient following surgery. Please be sensitive to the needs of the patient, knowing that while they do need visitors, they also need their rest to recover quickly and fully. Please be sure to limit all noise and keep your voices as low as possible as patients in other rooms may be trying to sleep during the day.
