Bariatric Surgery Center

St. Vincent's Bariatric Surgery Center is Recognized!

St. Vincent's Medical Center is an approved Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) through the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).  The program accredits inpatient and outpatient bariatric surgery centers in the United States and Canada that have undergone an independent, voluntary, and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards.  Bariatric surgery accreditation not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks, but also supports continuous quality improvement.

According to the American Obesity Association obesity is a condition that has now reached epidemic proportions.  In the United States, more than 11 million people suffer from severe obesity and an estimated 93 million people are obese. The comorbidities associated with obesity range from diabetes and heart disease to certain types of cancers.  Bariatric surgical procedures have been shown to reduce obesity, improve mortality, and decrease the health risks from chronic diseases such as cardiomyopathy and diabetes.  For these reasons, the MBSAQIP will recognize those facilities that implement defined standards of care, document their outcomes, and participate in regular reviews to evaluate their bariatric surgical programs.

"I would not go to a Medical Center that was not accredited if I needed bariatric surgery," said Douglas A. Ross, MD, Chairman of Surgery, and Vice President of the Surgical Service Line at St. Vincent's.

"Caring for Bariatric Patients is quite specialized and acquiring accreditation is not easy.  It assures patients and their families that we are well prepared to take care of them.  Our team of bariatric surgeons is second to none in the State," Dr. Ross said.

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) recognizes surgical programs with excellent surgical outcomes and comprehensive services for patients.  St. Vincent's Bariatric Surgery Center offers a comprehensive program to meet patients' medical, surgical, and emotional needs.  Low-risk and minimally invasive weight loss surgery procedures are performed by weight loss surgeons supported by a team of nurses, dietitians and others.

The success of the program is based on positive outcomes and greatly enhanced by counseling in the nutrition, exercise and psychosocial aspects of obesity.  The St. Vincent's team of experienced surgeons, doctors, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, operating room staff, nurses, nutritionists, and therapists know how to care for obese patients and are committed to taking care of them before, during and after their stay.
