PET / CT Scans
Take a Video Tour
By definition, a PET/CT (positron emission tomography/ computerized tomography) scan requires a safe, small amount of radioactive material (tracer) be given intravenously (by IV), usually in the arm.
The tracer travels through your blood and collects in organs and tissues, allowing the radiologist see certain areas or diseases more clearly.
As the subject being scanned, you will be asked to rest quite still on a platform. This platform then slides into a large, tunnel-like scanner. It's important that you remain as still as possible as movement can blur the images produced and cause errors.
The PET/CT scanner detects signals from the tracer and these are interpreted by a computer and displayed as 3-D pictures on the screen for your physician to read. How long the test will take depends on which part of your body is being scanned.
