Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a large magnet and radio waves to send data that allows your physician to “see” organs and structures inside your body. MRI scans can assist in the diagnosis of conditions and diseases ranging from torn ligaments, to brain tumors and other cancers, to problems that impact the spinal cord.
During the scan, you lie on a platform that slides inside a tunnel-shaped machine. The scan, which is painless, may take a long time and you must stay still. MRI machines do make noise, and you may want to use earplugs.
Before scheduling a scan, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, have an electronic device such as a cardiac pacemaker, or have pieces of metal in your body (for instance, in the case of military personnel or welders, there may be shrapnel or bits of metal that were never removed).
