Podiatry Services at St. Vincent's

St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport CT Department Of MedicinePodiatry at St. Vincent’s seeks to identify, relieve and/or correct foot problems that can arise from a number of causes. With its 26 bones, 33 joints and 100-plus ligaments, numerous issues within this exceedingly important body appendage can cause pain, weakness or general discomfort that has the potential to disrupt anyone’s life. Whether simply annoying or severe, this ‘disruption’ indicates a podiatrist’s examination is needed.

Conditions Seen By St. Vincent’s Podiatrists

  • bunions (the painful, hard bumps on the big toe joint toward the interior side of the foot)
  • calluses, corns (skin that has thickened due to constant friction or pressure)
  • plantar fasciitis (warts that form on the soles of the feet)
  • fallen arches (also called flat feet)
  • sores that don’t heal
  • Morton's neuroma
  • stress fractures
  • tarsal tunnel syndrome (compression of a nerve)

St. Vincent’s podiatrists approach each patient’s foot problem as unique to his or her health, physical condition and medical history. An evaluation of the patient’s medical condition is made and the lower leg is examined to determine issues that may be contributing to the pain. Conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, pregnancy and obesity can be the cause of foot pain, or may be exacerbating an existing problem. All medical conditions are considered throughout treatment. Imaging is scheduled only as required and can be done in St. Vincent’s state-of-the-art radiology center.

Our podiatrists are experienced in recognizing when a noninvasive or minimally invasive procedure to correct a foot problem should be implemented, and surgery is performed at St. Vincent’s. However, the initial goal is always to restore the foot to optimum health through tested, effective non-surgical means. These can include foot orthosis, cryotherapy, injections, medication or palliative care.
