Intensive care at St. Vincent’s refers to the close, comprehensive, multidisciplinary care and monitoring a patient receives who is critically ill, has undergone major surgery, and/or has suffered life-threatening injuries or wounds. Intensive care unit (ICU) patients have their care coordinated and overseen by a highly qualified physician with comprehensive training in critical-care medicine. The intensivist is present or immediately available 24 hours a day.
Improving Patient Outcomes
The intensivist discipline is relatively new. Though many hospitals do not yet have intestivists on staff, St. Vincent’s experience shows that having these expert medical professionals available to evaluate and provide close care in concert with a team of specialists, advanced care nurses and skilled technologist, produces improved patient outcomes. Board certification in critical-care medicine requires fellowship training for these physicians once they have completed their primary residency training in internal medicine, anesthesiology or surgery.
