A leader in the teatment of A-fib

St. Vincent’s Medical Center located in Bridgeport, CT is the only hospital not just in the state, but in the tri-state area to offer a comprehensive program with both medical and surgical treatments to treat atrial fibrillation, also known as rapid or irregular heartbeat.

Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib)

Atrial fibrillation or A-fib is a rhythm disorder that occurs when electrical signals cause the upper chambers of the heart, the atria, to beat rapidly and erratically. The disease produces lifestyle-damaging symptoms such as palpitations, fatigue and shortness of breath, which not only can prevent people from participating in activities they enjoy, but can create fear and anxiety in those individuals and their families.

Although not life-threatening in and of itself, untreated A-fib is a primary cause of stroke and a weakening of the heart called congestive heart failure. In fact 35% of A- fib patients will have a stroke in their lifetime. It also becomes more difficult to treat over time and can lead to irreversible heart damage. Risk factors include age, high blood pressure, heart failure, valve problems and past open heart surgery.

St. Vincent’s A-fib Comprehensive Program

St. Vincent’s A-fib comprehensive treatment program includes the latest therapies of Trans-Catheter-AblationMini-Maze Surgery., and a cutting edge procedure which combines the two called Hybrid Ablation. Click in to read more about Hybrid Ablation.

St. Vincent’s also offers  the traditional therapies of prescription medications including blood thinners to control the heart’s rhythm and prevent a stroke. These drugs can sometimes lose effectiveness or produce unwanted side effects necessitating other treatment options, but for some patients, they are enough to control their A-fib / arrhythmia. At St. Vincent’s people with A-fib can also opt for a pacemaker implant to help regulate the heart’s rhythms or . Other treatments include cardioversion, which uses drugs or a controlled electric shock to jolt the heart back into a normal rhythm.

A multi-disciplinary approach

Patients who come to St. Vincent’s will have their symptoms and histories reviewed by the A-fib multi-disciplinary team. Together, cardiologists and surgeons will help patients decide which treatment is best suited to their medical needs.  Let St. Vincent’s help you select the best option to treat your A-fib and restore your energy and lifestyle.
