Why Our Patients Trust St. Vincent's
Ann E. Ballas: Answering the Call
Nursing can be a job, or it can be a calling. In the case of Ann E. Ballas, RN, CRN, it is definitely a calling. Ann has been a nurse at St. Vincent’s Medical Center for more than 30 years and is currently the charge nurse in the Radiology Department, where she oversees complex interventional procedures. She recently received the Pasquariello Award as 2010 Employee of the Year, certainly an impressive recognition. What reallymakes Ann so special to her patients is her caring, nurturing and sensitive nature.
“Patients fear the unknown and they expect, and deserve, respectful, honest and competent care,” she says. Upon arriving in her department for bronchoscopy, radiofrequency ablation or CT scan-guided lung biopsies, Ann encourages family involvement ensuring that everyone is informed about what to expect during and after procedures—lessening their anxiety.
“Our highly skilled Radiology employees incorporate a team approach in order to deliver the safest care possible.” The Radiology Department has earned multi-modality accreditations by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
“I am a caregiver. I help the patient through difficult times and ultimately hopefully improve their outcome. I’m like your mom who will care for you and guide you through the process.” This is indicative of the love and understanding she has for everyone—patients and coworkers alike.
“Patients need to trust the person working with them so they feel safe and nurtured.” Ann Ballas fosters that trust by never compromising her honesty and integrity, and her reassurance allows patients to focus on getting well.
