The healthcare team at the St. Vincent’s Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to treating musculoskeletal cancers.
Our multidisciplinary team of surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists work closely with your primary care physician to coordinate your care and keep you safe.
Musculoskeletal cancers include cancer of the:
- Bones and Joints
- Soft tissues, cartilage, muscle, fat, blood vessels, connective and supportive tissue in the body (Sarcomas)
Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Cancers
Primary bone and joint cancers (cancer that begins in the bone as opposed to having spread from another location) are rare. There are approximately 2,800 new bone and joint cancers diagnosed annually in the United States. The three common types of bone and joint cancers are:
- Osteosarcoma
- Ewing's sarcoma
- Chondrosarcoma
Soft tissue sarcomas are most commonly found in the extremities but can also occur in the head and neck region and the trunk. There are approximately 11,000 soft tissue sarcomas diagnosed annually in the U.S.
A full range of diagnostic tools - at your disposal
Our healthcare team at the St. Vincent’s Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care will do a full range of diagnostic tests for both bone and soft tissue sarcoma cancers including:
- X-Rays
- MRI
- CT or CAT Scan
- PET Scan
- Bone Scan
- Biopsy
Cancer treatment at St. Vincent's
If cancer is detected, depending on the stage of the cancer, there are several types of treatment available:
• Radiation therapy
• Chemotherapy
• Surgery
Our healthcare team employs a comprehensive care approach to treating patients that addresses the medical as well as the psychological needs of cancer patients and their families. From diagnosis to treatment to support and survivorship skills, our team, led by physicians, surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, technicians, nurses and support staff, work collaboratively to determine individualized treatment options leading to the most optimal results for you.

The Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care is accredited with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
Criteria for accreditation include a relationship with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and a representative from the ACS is a member of our Hospital Committee on Cancer.
