Our healthcare team at St. Vincent’s Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to treating blood cancers.
Our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists work closely with your primary care physician to coordinate your care and keep you safe.
Hematology (blood) cancers includes cancers such as:
- Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- Myelodysplastic Syndromes
Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a common form of blood cancer, with two main types, Hodgkins and Non-Hodgkins. Non-Hodgkins, the most frequently diagnosed form of the two, can occur at any age and is usually identified by larger than normal lymph nodes. There are approximately 66,000 new Non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases diagnosed annually in the United States with more than 19,000 deaths from this disease.
Leukemia
Leukemia is a blood cell cancer that begins in the bone marrow. An excess of abnormal white blood cells are formed crowding out the normal blood cells. This can lead to problems such as anemia, bleeding and infections. It is estimated that approximately 44,600 new cases of Leukemia will be diagnosed with nearly 22,000 per year resulting in deaths.
Cancer treatment at St. Vincent's
There are multiple ways of treating blood cancers, including a combination of the following treatments:
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Stem cell transplant
- Biopsy
Our healthcare team employs a comprehensive care approach to treating patients that addresses the medical as well as the psychological needs of cancer patients and their families. From diagnosis to treatment to support and survivorship skills, our team, composed of physicians, surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, technicians, hematologist, pathologist, nurses and support staff, work collaboratively to determine individualized treatment options leading to the most optimal results for the patient.

The Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care is accredited with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
Criteria for accreditation include a relationship with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and a representative from the ACS is a member of our Hospital Committee on Cancer.
