Facts about CNS cancer
The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is the center of thought, feeling, memory, speech, vision, hearing, movement, and much more. The spinal cord and special nerves in the head called cranial nerves help carry messages from the brain to the rest of the body. The brain is protected in the skull and bathed in fluid known as cerebral spinal fluid or CSF.
It is estimated that about 22,000 malignant tumors of the brain and spinal cord will be diagnosed each year. It's estimated that about 13,000 people will die from these tumors yearly.
The cause for CNS tumors is not known but researchers have found some of the chemical changes that occur in normal brain cells may lead to the formation of brain tumors.
