In 1987, St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation created Fairfield County's premiere cancer charity - Swim Across the Sound.
Designed to assist cancer patients and their families, The Swim raises funds from sponsorships, donations and events. Particularly, the Swim Annual Golf Tournament, Aquathon at Fairfield University, and Swim Memorial Service at Captain's Cove all lead up to the main event, the "Swim" from Port Jefferson, New York to Captain's Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, CT.
In 2004, over $2.4 million was raised through donations. The funds are used to subsidize 34 different cancer programs.
