Research (Clinical Trials)

Cardiovascular Research
St. Vincent's Medical Center physicians and staff are committed to ongoing clinical research. Research outcomes assist physicians to find ways to improve health, answer scientific questions, and help find better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat heart disease.

A clinical trial is a scientifically controlled study involving human participants who volunteer to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of investigational drugs, vaccines, devices or new ways of using existing treatments.

Clinical trials that are currently recruiting patients at St. Vincent's Medical Center:

  1. Coronary Artery Disease: Angiogenesis
This study is a Phase 1, open label, dose escalation study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and effectiveness of an investigational growth factor administered by intramyocardial injection for the treatment of coronary heart disease.
Highlighted Criteria: Potential Candidates must be age 25 or older with 70% or more blockages of one or more major arteries and is not a candidate for coronary bypass surgery or other modes of therapy. Prospective candidates must also have documented stable angina for 3 months. If study qualifications are met, two injections of an investigational growth factor will be injected directly into the heart via a mini thoracotomy. There will be 6 follow up visits over 12 months time.
  2. Electrophysiology: Left Ventricular Capture Management
This study is a prospective, multi-center, non-randomized, clinical trial designed to evaluate the accuracy of the Left Ventricular Capture Management software feature for a particular manufacturer of defibrillators.
Highlighted Criteria: Must be age 18 or older that either require a specific brand defibrillator or currently have a specific brand device implanted. There will be 3 follow up visits over the course of 3 months.
