Funding from the SWIM Across the Sound, provides St. Vincent's the ability to offer FREE monthly prostate cancer screenings at various locations throughout Fairfield County. More than 650 men are screened by the SWIM Prostate Cancer Institute each year. Appointments are available to men age 50 and over and to those over age 40 who are at higher risk due to family history or being of African-American descent. (Does not include men who are currently seeing an Urologist or who have been screened within the past year.)
The screening consists of a PSA blood test, drawn by St. Vincent's phlebotomists, along with a digital rectal exam performed by volunteer Urologists. Screening results and explanatory letters are sent to the patient and his designated doctor. If necessary, a Registered Nurse will follow up with screening participants.
If the amount of PSA in your blood is found to be higher than normal, it does not necessarily mean you have prostate cancer. Most men with mildly elevated PSA levels do not have prostate cancer. Several less serious conditions can also cause PSA levels to rise. To determine the cause of your elevated test your doctor may recommend that you have a repeat PSA, or additional tests such as a free PSA blood test, trans-rectal ultrasound or a biopsy to detect cancer.
Appointments are required.
