SVMC Red Cross Hero
On Thursday, April 5, Christine Toni, RPh, was honored at the annual American Red Cross Heroes of Lower Fairfield County event. Christine was a major contributor to the existence of the Dispensary of Hope, a recently opened pharmacy in Bridgeport funded in part by Ascension Health and Fairfield County Community Foundation.
The Dispensary offers many critical health maintenance prescriptions at no cost to the uninsured and low income community. The Dispensary of Hope is a partnership of local health service organizations participating in the Primary Care Action Group, as well as the City of Bridgeport and the State of Connecticut.
Toni gave up her job as a licensed pharmacist at St. Vincent’s to run the Dispensary. She and her family painted and restored the donated space. She worked with community partners to build a volunteer team that would staff the dispensary and
work with patients to map and support their needs.
In his nomination of Christine Toni, St. Vincent’s Corporate Senior Vice President Ronald Bianchi, wrote, “Christine’s efforts and leadership are truly heroic, because she used her skills to become the voice of the poor.” He adds that “For Christine, this is more of a calling than a job. She and those working with her are saving lives.”
These members of the local community received awards due to their actions which epitomize the mission of the American Red Cross, helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
