St. Vincent’s Medical Center and Bridgeport Hospital, in collaboration with the Primary Care Action Group joined with Connecticut state agencies and the City of Bridgeport to create the Hope Dispensary of Greater Bridgeport. The program, which opened on March 21, 2011, provides prescription medicines at no cost to uninsured, low-income residents of Greater Bridgeport.

Established in 2003, Dispensary of Hope works with healthcare providers, clinics, and pharmaceutical companies nationwide to provide patients with necessary prescription care. We do this largely by distributing unused sample medications -- medications that would otherwise be thrown away -- to people without prescription coverage.

Our goal: 100% Hope, 0% Waste

About the Hope Dispensary of Greater Bridgeport
St. Vincent’s Medical Center and Bridgeport Hospital, in collaboration with the Primary Care Action Group, a local health insurance coverage advocacy collaborative of service organizations, joined with Connecticut state agencies and the City of Bridgeport to create the Hope Dispensary of Greater Bridgeport. The program, the first in Connecticut, which opened on March 21, 2011, provides prescription medicines at no cost to uninsured, low-income residents of Greater Bridgeport.  Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic healthcare system, and parent organization for St. Vincent’s Medical Center, gave a $160,000 grant to help launch the project, while the Fairfield County Community Foundation is also supporting with a recent grant. A licensed St. Vincent’s pharmacist works onsite.  Medications for treatment of cardiac, pulmonary, mental health diseases, and diabetes are provided.  An innovative system was developed to collect still-viable prescription medicines donated by physicians’ offices and local pharmacies delighted to recycle their unused medicines and contribute to public health.  Strict government regulatory and licensing standards are rigorously observed. The Greater Bridgeport Medical Association coordinates the outreach to doctors to encourage them to donate their unused drug samples and products.

About the Dispensary of Hope National Organization
Established in 2003, Dispensary of Hope, a national network of dispensing sites, works with healthcare providers, clinics, and pharmaceutical companies nationwide to provide patients with necessary prescription care. We do this largely by distributing unused sample medications -- medications that would otherwise be thrown away -- to people without prescription coverage. Our goal: 100% Hope, 0% Waste. We assist financially needy and underserved individuals in getting the medications they need for short- and long-term care. Dispensing sites operate in a variety of locations including community clinics and pharmacies for the indigent, hospital outpatient pharmacies and county health departments.  The Dispensary has collected and distributed tens of millions of dollars worth of pharmaceuticals and filled more than 200,000 prescriptions for patients who otherwise couldn’t afford them. The Dispensary of Hope’s sourcing strategy is directed at attaining medicines to treat the top five chronic diseases which fall under the categories of  cardiac, pulmonary, diabetes and mental health. Its formulary consists of 1700 different drugs, but will stock no controlled drugs. For more information, visit www.dispensaryofhope.org
