Stuart G. Marcus, MD, FACS, serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer and Chief Clinical Officer at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Dr. Marcus also serves as Chairman of Oncology. A specialist in gastrointestinal cancer surgery, Dr. Marcus is leading the development of the new cancer center at St. Vincent’s, which will bring together all the components of cancer care under one roof, allowing immediately accessible, coordinated care of the highest quality, including access to clinical research trials.

Dr. Marcus came to St. Vincent’s in August 2006 from New York University, having served as program director of the general surgery training program there and chief of surgery at Bellevue Hospital Center. Throughout this time, he coordinated the integration of cancer services at Bellevue Hospital Center, creating a multi-disciplinary cancer center there.

A Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Marcus is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and Alpha Omega Medical Honor Society, and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the NYU School of Medicine. He holds a B.A. degree from Rutgers University, and in 1987 earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and surgical residency at NYU School of Medicine, where he also served as Chief Resident. He also completed a three-year surgical oncology research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr. Marcus also won the Public Service Award from Rutgers College, the James Ewing Student Research Fellowship from the Society of Surgical Oncology, the 2002 Attending of the Year Award from the NYU Department of Surgery, and was an honoree at the Coaches VS. Cancer Classic held in 2003 at Madison Square Garden, sponsored by the Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Marcus holds many professional memberships including the American College of Surgeons, American Association of Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society of Surgical Oncology, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He is involved with multiple basic science and clinical research studies, has published extensively in his field, and is a speaker and presenter at conferences across the country.
