John D. Newman has been appointed Vice President and General Counsel for St. Vincent's Health Services, a new position. Newman will be responsible for contracts and corporate legal matters.
Prior to joining St. Vincent's, Newman was a partner in the law firm of Reid & Riege in Hartford. Joining Reid and Riege in 1996, he represented a wide range of providers concerning regulatory issues pertaining to the delivery of healthcare including hospitals, physicians, freestanding facilities, and provider sponsored organizations. He regularly appeared before a variety of agencies on certificate of need and licensure matters, professional disciplinary proceedings, reimbursement contests, and health care insurance disputes. He represented the first hospital to convert from nonprofit to for-profit status under Connecticut law. Newman also has significant experience in addressing compliance, fraud and abuse reimbursement, and professional responsibility issues.
After graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University with a bachelors of arts degree in political science, Newman earned his juris doctorate degree from Duke University School of Law in 1984. He passed the bar in Connecticut in 1984. He has been listed consistently in "The Best Lawyers in America" for healthcare since 1997.
Newman is a member of the American and Connecticut Health Lawyers Associations, and the American and Connecticut Bar Associations. Lecturing frequently before national and local healthcare organizations, Newman recently wrote the American Health Lawyers Association's "Representing Physicians Handbook," which addressed issues between hospitals and hospital-based providers.
